What is MySpeed?
MySpeed lets you speed up or slow down video.
You can change the playback speed of Flash and HTML5 video without any loss of audio quality.
Why is it useful?
The average person can read and fully understand content at 200-250 words per minute, and speed readers can comprehend 400-600 plus words per minute. Instructional e-learning videos move at the speed of speech at just 100-125 words per minute. So you can often be locked in to a speed that too slow for your learning capacity.
With MySpeed you can use variable playback speed to:
- Speed up videos to save time, or watch more content in less time.
- Slow down to learn or take notes. Ideal if the content is not in your native language, or if you want to track exact mouse movements in software training videos.
- Improve your learning with greater comprehension and less frustration.
How does it work?
MySpeed uses a patented and proprietary technique for processing audio signals called 'Time-Scale Modification'. This allows you to manipulate the playback speed of Flash/HTML5 videos from .3X to 5X normal speed. And here’s the cool part it does it without scrunching up the audio track, so there’s no 'chipmunking' in the sound.
Once installed whenever Flash/HTML5 video is detected the MySpeed slider bar(see image at top of this page) appears and this allows you to change the playback rate. It really is that simple.
What are the options?
There are two versions; MySpeed, and MySpeed Premier. Essentially MySpeed allows you to vary the playback speed of videos on-line, whereas MySpeed Premier allows you to do that both on-line and off-line should you download content.
The software works on both Windows and Mac. You can find the full and upto date technical specification here.
The Windows version has slightly more features than the corresponding Mac version and can play HTML5 audio and video on-line in addition to Flash video.
MySpeed works with most common internet browsers but does not support some 64 bit versions of the browsers as it is a 32 bit application only.
Our experience and thoughts
We've found MySpeed perfect for viewing on-line courses, training videos, webinar replays, and of course YouTube content.
A free 7 day trial is available which we used to evaluate the product. We'd recommend that you do the same to prove its worth and see if it's suited to you.
It was simple to install and setup. We have it starting automatically when Windows starts up and have set it so we can vary the playback speed between 0.3 and 3.0 times normal speed. You can also set up Hot Keys so you can make speed changes using the keyboard.
You can access the MySpeed application manually from the notification area (previously known as the Tray) on Windows machines, where you can change preferences, enable/disable MySpeed and show the MySpeed slider bar.
The Windows version has a handy little feature where you can see a rolling count of how much time MySpeed has saved you in the slider bar.(the image at the top of the page shows we have saved over 36 hours to date on that install.
We only use MySpeed for changing the speed of videos we watch on-line.
We found MySpeed Premier somewhat restrictive for us as it does not support all of the desktop video players we use.
... but MySpeed has become an essential tool. We use it every single day and can therefore highly recommend it to you.
You can access the free 7 day trial here. You only need provide your name and email address to get access.
