"I am a new Solid Edge user here at Mecmesin, although an old hand of CAD packages. I have used SolidWorks for over eleven years and Autodesk Inventor over the past year.
Unfortunately, when you have used other CAD packages, there is a danger that you get complacent that they should all work the same way. Therefore when I think back to how I was trained on SolidWorks, I can remember being part of a training class as a new operator who hadn’t logged on before with other person in the same class with three plus years experience. Needless to say, the course was expensive, off site and disruptive with the different levels of experience and of little benefit to me. However SolidWorks became an excellent package over the years and proved very productive.
Since then I have worked at companies whereby I have used Inventor with the training means being reading through manuals of over 1000 pages whilst being expected to be up and running within a short period of time. This method of learning is very stressful and sometimes the self imposed pressures made by yourself make it a struggle and frustration when you know what is achievable on previous packages that you are comfortable with.
Therefore to start using Solid Edge within the last month was envisaged to be a similar daunting experience and to be fair the first week was. Soon after, I was set-up to have access to the Solid Mastermind website and followed the training videos at work and home. I have found the website invaluable in the sense that the training videos sell the capability of Solid Edge whilst allowing you to learn at your own pace. These videos and tips have built up my confidence to establish the basics and know what and how to do things that otherwise would have been difficult to achieve.
Some of the new things learnt have already been shared with other more experienced users to make our jobs easier. I personally prefer the training videos over a training course or other methods previously described and wished other CAD packages could offer similar.
Whilst I am still learning Solid Edge and getting up to speed as is expected, I feel very fortunate that the Solid Mastermind website is there for reference should I get into difficulty."
