How to make a part a reference part in a drawing

Question
I have created a drawing of an assembly and would like to make one of the parts a reference part so that its geometry does not obscure any of the other components behind it in the drawing view.

Answer
There are two ways to do this. It can either be controlled from the assembly or the draft file. To control it from the assembly you need to right click on the part and choose 'Occurrence Properties', then in the dialogue make sure 'Yes' is chosen for the Reference option. Then when a drawing view of the assembly is created the part will automatically appear as a reference part. Alternatively you can simply right click on the drawing view once it has been created and choose 'Properties' then select the display tab. Select the part in the list and uncheck the 'Derive display as reference from assembly' option and check the 'Reference' option. Then update the drawing view.
